KNOCK KNOCK CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

The project is a new children’s museum constructed on a bluff overlooking Baton Rouge’s City Brooks Community Park. The museum is a 30,000 square-foot, three-story facility with the lowest level constructed into the side of the hill. Our scope of work was the full structural design for the project. Due to the topography of the site, the structure was designed using a system of reinforced concrete retaining walls cut into the hill to allow construction of the lowest level. The structural design of the upper levels used a combination of structural steel framing and open-web steel bar joists. The design of the roof framing was accomplished using structural steel to accommodate the varying slopes and angles associated with the multiple roof beacons and general multi-level configuration of the roof system. The foundation is a shallow foundation system, using a series of spread footings and grade beams with a slab-on-grade floor system.
